On his latest trip to the continent, Prime Minister David Cameron has told business leaders and investors in Singapore to consider the benefits of investing in the ‘Northern Powerhouse’.

Cameron, accompanied by a delegation of business leaders from Manchester, explained the value that can be found for investors by turning their attention away from London and into the UK’s growing areas. He was keen to emphasise to the audience that a ‘UK investment’ no longer means just London, but also includes a range of excellent opportunities further north.

Whilst the global audience may be waking up to the possibilities that the UK’s northern cities such as Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Hull, Newcastle and Sheffield can provide, UK investors have already been migrating away from the capital in search of a greater balance between capital appreciation and rental return.

Manchester is at the forefront of the government’s £7 billion plans for the Northern Powerhouse and will be the first city outside of London to receive devolved powers managed by a devolved mayor’s office. With HSBC recently announcing Manchester as the new number one location in the UK for buy-to-let properties, the unique powers they are planned to help Manchester build its position as the centre of the Northern Powerhouse.

The interest of international investors has already turned towards Manchester, with a ‘four-year price surge’ expected in the city as property purchasers at home and abroad look to capitalise on the city’s growth.
