New Poll Shows Renting Increasingly Popular Among Retirees

The popularity of the private rented sector continues to increase as the number of retirees renting their accommodation soared by over 200,000 in the last four years, says a new poll.

The poll, commissioned by the National Landlord Association (NLA), gathered data from over 700 private renters throughout Q1 2016 and found that the proportion of retired renters has grown by 13% since 2012 – or an estimated 220,000* retirees.

The area registering the highest proportion of retirees in the rented sector is the South East, where 17% of all retired people are living in rented properties; closely followed by the South West and the North West, where 15% of their retiree population lives in privately-owned accommodation.

Elsewhere in the UK, the areas with the lowest proportion of retirees in the private rented sector are London and Northern Ireland, which sees privately rented accommodation house 3% and 1% of its retirees respectively.

The distribution of retirees living in rented accommodation was found to vary dramatically across the regions however, with nearly four times more rented retirees in the North West (15%) compared to the North East (4%), and twice as many retirees rent property in the West Midlands (8%) than in the East Midlands (4%).

In the responses gathered from over 1,000 landlords, the NLA found that the proportion of landlords who let to retired renters has almost halved over the course of 4 years, with 9% of landlords claiming they currently rent to retired tenants – 10% less than in 2012.

As the private rented sector increases in popularity among a range of ages, confidence in the buy-to-let market increased in the first quarter of 2016 as 4 out of 10 landlords perceived tenant demand is on the rise.
