Among the 48 cities which saw an increase in the number of private sector jobs around the UK, Barnsley is ranked as the best performing city in the year 2012-13, according to the latest figures.

Analysing the economic growth of all cities around the UK, the newest Centre for Cities report, released in 2015, identified which cities have the highest employment rates and found Barnsley’s private sector employment grew by 9.4% between 2012 and 2013.

With a similar increase in private sector employment growth, Barnsley saw 4,500 more jobs created in 2013 than in 2012, to a total of 52,600; and currently continues to boast an employment rate above the regional (70.2%) and national (72.1%) rates.

Following Barnsley in the list of cities with largest private sector job growth, Coventry and Milton Keynes were placed in the second and third place respectively. On the other hand, London was placed at the tenth spot with only a 3.5% increase.

Centre for Cities also ranks Barnsley ninth for increase in net number of private jobs over the last decade – with an 8.4% increase in private sector jobs from 2004 to 2013.

Moreover, Barnsley also made the top 10 cities with highest growth in number of homes over the same 10-year period with an increase of 8.5%, which saw 8,350 more homes built between 2004 and 2013.

According to Councillor Roy Miller from Barnsley Borough Council, the news is direct indication that Barnsley is a “great place to invest and grow your business”.

The Councillor also announced that there a number of projects in the pipeline to help Barnsley’s economy thrive, including allocating more land for commercial and residential property to attract new business and grow their existing stock.
