Record Breaking Year for Barnsley’s Economic Growth

Barnsley experienced its highest economic growth in seven years, exceeding its economic targets, the city attracted nearly three times more business than predicted, according to the latest figures.

Barnsley experienced its highest economic growth in seven years, exceeding its economic targets, the city attracted nearly three times more business than predicted, according to the latest figures.

Numbers from Barnsley Council show a 50% increase in enquiries from companies to relocate their businesses to Barnsley in 2015 from the previous year, resulting in 23 new businesses in Barnsley over the past 12 months.


When factoring the increase in new employers in the borough, with 121 new startups created and the growth of hundreds of existing businesses, it was revealed that businesses in Barnsley created 1,385 new private sector jobs in the last year.


Barnsley’s private sector employment growth over the past five years has stood among the highest in the country. According to the Centre for Cities newest report, between 2012 and 2013 Barnsley saw the highest proportion of private sector jobs created in all of the UK registering a 9.8% increase.


Enterprising Barnsley, which provides specialist support to businesses as part of a 4-year development scheme set up by Barnsley Council to attract businesses in the area, reports that in the last 3 years their efforts amounted to the creation of 4040 new jobs, the launch of 96 new companies and the securement of £14 million of private sector investment.


In light of the news, Matt Gladstone at the head of Enterprising Barnsley, commented that the recent investment in new business parks and infrastructure happening in Barnsley in the latest years, in particular in the Sheffield City Region, “is proving attractive” and that the group is looking to work further into establishing Barnsley as a premium business destination creating 1,300 jobs in 2016 and to further expand its local economy.
