A £57 million investment scheme, commissioned as part of plans to develop the town centre, has begun construction in Barnsley.

Approved as a part of the ‘Better Barnsley’ scheme, which aims to raise the local economy and expand the population in Barnsley, the development programme is set to see new retail and leisure facilities built within the town, with completion of the full programme due in February 2018.

The scheme, alongside additional improvements to public infrastructure, will see a new shopping boulevard added to the town centre’s main centre The Alhambra, a 9-screen cinema complex, a new central library and a new car park, to improve parking in the town centre.

The town centre is also set to see a wider regeneration programme, which will also include a refurbishment of Barnsley’s historic market hall.

The revitalisation was described by Councillor Roy Miller as a ‘really exciting opportunity’ for Barnsley to build upon its position as, ‘one of the best performing towns in the UK with regards to private sector employment growth, experience a rise of 9.4%, between 2012 and 2013, the best in the UK.’

Located between the Northern Powerhouse cities of Sheffield and Leeds, Barnsley is looking to capitalise on the economic development that the North has experienced in recent years by attracting more private sector investment, creating more jobs and providing a boost to the local economy and property market.

The redevelopment of Barnsley town centre and the Alhambra centre is expected to have a direct positive impact on lettings in the area, with the wider wave of regeneration throughout the town anticipated to attract more tenants to the area.
